The four-year UPLIFT
study was a multicentre,
multinational (37 countries), randomised, double-blind,
placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial which commenced in
December 2002.
The UPLIFT
trial compared SPIRIVA
vs. Placebo
(hereafter referred to "control"), allowing all patients
in both treatment arms throughout thetrial to use and adjust
all prescribed respiratory medications, other than anticholinergics.
Active smokers were offered a smoking cessation program.
• Patients were randomised 1:1 to receive:
18 μg tiotropium once daily via HandiHaler![]()
or
a matched placebo once daily via HandiHaler![]()
